Solar Geyser Installation Benoni
Solar geyser installation in Benoni starts with two local questions: will the collectors survive hail, and will the pipes survive a sub-zero night? Both answers go on the quote. For a straight electric replacement, see geyser installation.
Solar Water Heating, From the Collector to the Tap
A solar system is a geyser, a collector and the pipes between them, and each one is a separate choice.
-
Complete solar geysers
A solar cylinder with its roof collectors, sized for the household and for the roof it sits on.
-
Solar conversions
Collectors added to an electric geyser that still has good years left in it.
-
Collector mounting
Frames fixed to the roof structure on tile or sheeting, with every roof penetration sealed.
-
Pumps and controllers
The circulation pump and controller that move heat from the roof to a geyser inside the roof space.
-
Heat pumps
A heat pump on a new or existing geyser, as an alternative to collectors on the roof.
-
Repairs to existing systems
Leaking collector connections, cracked tubes, failed pumps and valves on solar systems already on a roof.
Collectors on an East Rand Roof Have to Survive Hail
Three recent storms show what the sky can do here, and they should change which collector you buy and how it is fixed down.
Hail has hit Benoni hard more than once in recent years. The Star reported that the storms of 30 November 2025 brought large hail particularly over the East Rand, naming Benoni along with Brakpan, Springs, Kempton Park, Thembisa and Boksburg, and causing damage to vehicles, roofs and property. Three years earlier, on 10 November 2022, hail destroyed the roofs of three houses at Kids Haven in Mackenzie Park, and water came through the ceilings.
A solar collector is the most exposed thing on a roof. It faces the sky at an angle, and it takes hail on glass rather than on tile or steel. When you compare systems, ask what hail rating the collector was tested to, and what its warranty says about hail damage, because those answers differ from one product to the next. A cracked collector does not simply stop heating, either: it can leak into the roof space until someone notices the ceiling.

In general terms, a flat plate collector puts one sheet of toughened glass over the absorber, while an evacuated tube collector uses a row of separate glass tubes. After a storm, a damaged flat plate usually means a panel to replace, and a damaged tube collector may only need the broken tubes swapped one at a time. Neither type is hail-proof, so the tested rating is the figure to compare, not the type.
How the collector is fixed matters as much as which one it is. The frame should be anchored to the roof structure, not only to tiles or sheeting, so a storm cannot lift or shift it and open a path for water. The February 2021 hailstorm showed how quickly water finds that path: at the Northmead Bowling Club, parts of the ceiling collapsed as water leaked through the roof, and the chairperson said the gutters had not been cleaned in years.
Winter brings the opposite problem. The City of Ekurhuleni has warned that temperatures here can drop to sub-zero levels, and water standing in a roof collector on a clear, freezing night can split it, so ask how any system on a quote protects itself from frost. Whatever you choose, the PIRB says solar water heaters still need a plumbing certificate of compliance under SANS 10106, even though electric geysers no longer do. The same PIRB update says heat pumps still need one too.
Ask for the collector’s tested hail rating and its frost protection in writing before you sign, and check that the SANS 10106 certificate is a line on the quote.

A Solar Quote You Can Compare Line by Line
At these prices the paperwork has to carry the detail, and these four methods are how it does.
Every component named
Collector, cylinder, pump and controller by brand, model and size, so two quotes can be compared like for like.
Conversion priced beside a new system
Where the current geyser is sound, both options are quoted, so you can see what keeping it saves.
Roof work shown before it is covered
Brackets and roof penetrations are photographed as they go in, so you know what is under the tiles.
Settings written down
Controller and backup element settings are recorded on the invoice, so they can be put back after a power cut or a repair.
Solar Geyser Faults With Simple Causes
Three things owners of older systems notice, and why none of them means the whole system is finished.
-
Lukewarm water after a sunny day
- What it usually means
- A circulation pump that has stopped, air trapped in the collector loop, or collectors in shade or under dust.
- What it needs
- The pump and controller checked, the loop bled, and the collectors looked at for shade, dirt or damage.
-
Water or steam venting on the roof in summer
- What it usually means
- The system overheating because little hot water is being used, often while the house is empty, and the relief valve doing its job.
- What it needs
- The valve checked, and a holiday setting or a collector cover discussed if it keeps happening.
-
The pump running at night
- What it usually means
- A faulty sensor or controller pumping heat out of the geyser into a cold collector after dark.
- What it needs
- The sensors and controller tested, and replaced if they have failed.
The Roof Is Checked Before a System Is Chosen
Orientation, shade and roof structure narrow the choice more than any brochure does.
- 1
Tell us about the house
Household size, roof type, and whether you want a new system or a conversion of your current geyser.
- 2
Roof and geyser check
The call-out fee in rand first. Then the roof’s direction, shade and structure, and the state of the existing geyser.
- 3
A written quote
Collector type and rating, frost protection, mounting, plumbing and the certificate, each on its own line.
- 4
Installed and commissioned
Filled, bled and run until the collector loop is circulating, then tested with you at a hot tap.
What Benoni Homeowners Ask Before Going Solar
The cost comes first, because a solar geyser costs several times as much as an electric one up front.
-
How much does solar geyser installation cost in Benoni?
A South African price guide updated in July 2026 puts a 150 litre solar geyser at R25,500 to R34,500 fully installed and a 200 litre at R29,500 to R42,500, including labour, plumbing, mounting and the certificate. Those are market ranges, not our rates. The guide says size, a thermosiphon or pumped split system, and roof type move the price.
-
Can my existing electric geyser be converted to solar?
Often, if the geyser is in good condition and the roof layout lets collectors connect to it sensibly. If the cylinder is old, converting it means fitting new solar parts to a tank that may fail first.
-
Evacuated tubes or flat plate: which suits a Benoni winter?
One 2026 South African price guide says evacuated tubes outperform flat plates on sub-zero mornings and strongly recommends them for Gauteng homes. Flat plates are simpler, and the roof’s direction and shade matter as much as the type.
-
Is a heat pump a better choice than a solar geyser?
It can be where the roof is shaded or faces the wrong way, as a heat pump needs no collectors and works at night. It still uses electricity, but a 2026 price guide rates it three to four times as efficient as an element and puts a 150 litre unit at R28,000 to R38,000 installed, a market range, not our rate.
-
How is a solar geyser protected from frost?
Indirect systems run an antifreeze heat transfer fluid through the collectors, so no household water sits on the roof overnight. Direct systems rely on frost valves that bleed a little water on a freezing night, or a controller that circulates warm water up from the geyser.
-
Will my insurer ask for the solar geyser’s certificate?
It may. A 2026 price guide warns that without a certificate of compliance, home insurance may not cover water damage from the installation. Keep it with the invoice and the collector’s warranty for the day after a hailstorm.
-
What maintenance does a solar geyser need?
Not much, but not none. Pumped systems need the pump and controller checked, and indirect systems need their fluid tested and topped up over the years. The cylinder still has an anode and valves, like any geyser.
-
Will I have hot water on cloudy days?
Yes, from the backup element. Put it on a timer so it runs only before the morning and evening showers, or it does the sun’s work and the saving disappears.
