Plumbing Prices Benoni
Plumbing prices Benoni homeowners find in published guides come in wide ranges, so every figure on this page carries its source and date. They are market ranges, not our rates. Your call-out fee is given in rand on the call back, before anyone drives. For a burst, start with the emergency plumber page.
Six Kinds of Cost, Explained Before You Need Them
Each comes with the market range that applies and the things that push a job towards either end of it.
-
Call-out fees
What the trip and the first look at the fault cost, and why your suburb changes the figure.
-
Hourly and after-hours labour
Standard rates, night and weekend rates, and how the time gets counted.
-
Geyser replacements
Electric and gas, installed. The geyser installation page explains what a compliant install includes.
-
Leak detection
Priced by method, because acoustic, thermal and tracer gas tests cost different amounts.
-
Drains and cameras
Rodding a blockage, and a CCTV inspection when the same drain keeps blocking.
-
Quotes and invoices
What a written quote should contain, and how to read the invoice against it.
A Call-Out Fee Is Mostly the Drive
Benoni is a large area to cross, and the published guides disagree about what crossing it should cost.
Benoni itself covers 175.55 square kilometres, according to the 2011 census figures on Wikipedia, and that count leaves out Daveyton and Etwatwa, which the census treats as separate places, although Ekurhuleni groups them with Benoni in its outage notices. Wikipedia puts Daveyton about 18 km north-east of Benoni and Etwatwa about 20 km away. Add Apex and the industrial areas of Benoni South, and one service area holds trips of very different lengths.
A call-out fee pays to get a plumber, a vehicle and a stock of parts to your door, and for the first look at the fault. On a short trip the drive is a small part of that; across town it is most of it. A single flat fee, quoted before anyone knows the suburb, has to overcharge the near addresses or undercharge the far ones. The diagnosis takes as long in one suburb as in another; the road does not.

The published guides do not agree either. Against the R450 to R950 in the table below, Kandua’s guide gives R450 to R750 for a standard call-out and a Johannesburg price guide R450 to R650 for most households. The top of one range is more than twice the bottom of another, so a fee only means something as one figure in rand for one address. The gap between the highest and lowest figures, about R500, is itself roughly the price of a call-out at the bottom of the range.
What the fee buys differs too. Some quotes fold the first hour of labour into the call-out and some add it on top, and Kandua’s guide puts a call-out plus the first hour at about R1,100 to R1,650 before materials. A 2018 post on a consumer forum described paying for that full first hour whether the plumber stayed ten minutes or sixty. Two fees that look R200 apart can end up level, or the other way round, once that first hour is counted.
The complaints in South African reviews are less about the size of the fee than about surprises: a call-out charged for a visit that fixed nothing, or a “no call-out fee” offer that turned into a fee once the quote was declined. That is why the fee here is worked out once the suburb is known, as one figure you can say yes or no to. Decline the quote after the visit and the call-out is the only charge. If the hour you need pushes the fee up, you hear that on the same call.
Ask for the call-out fee as one figure in rand for your suburb before you agree to a visit. A range, or a price that starts with “from”, is not yet a fee.

Four Rules That Keep the Bill Checkable
A price surprise is easier to prevent than to dispute, and each of these closes one gap where surprises start.
Labour fixed or capped
Labour on the quote is a fixed figure or a capped number of hours, never open-ended, so a slow job does not grow the bill.
Every part named
The invoice lists each part by brand and size, so it can be checked line by line against the quote it came from.
Making good on the quote
If a wall or floor has to be opened, closing it again is priced on the quote, not sent later as a second bill.
No paying twice for one blockage
A drain that blocks again gets a camera down it rather than a second rodding, so the money goes on the cause.

One Figure on the Phone, Every Line on Paper
The price arrives in stages, and you can stop after any of them.
- 1
Send the form
Put in your suburb, because it sets the call-out fee, and describe the fault so the right parts come along.
- 2
The fee on the phone
The call-out fee is given in rand, with any after-hours rate, before anyone drives. Stopping here costs nothing.
- 3
The quote in writing
Once the fault is found, each part and the labour are priced on paper. Nothing starts until you approve it.
- 4
Work, test, invoice
The repair is tested with you, then invoiced against the quote you approved.
Price Questions, Answered With Sources
Starting with the call-out fee, since it is the first figure you hear.
-
What is a normal plumber call-out fee in Benoni?
There is no single normal figure, because distance and what the fee includes both move it. An East Rand price guide lists R550 in standard hours, inside the national ranges in the table above; that is a market figure, not our rate. Yours is worked out for your suburb before anyone is sent.
-
What is a plumber’s hourly rate?
Kandua’s guide gives R450 to R850 an hour for standard work, and a Johannesburg price guide puts the average near R575. These are market figures, not our rates. Ask how time is counted, because the same rate billed in whole hours costs more than one billed by the half hour.
-
How much more does after-hours work cost?
Kandua’s guide puts an emergency call-out at about R600 to R1,300, an East Rand price guide lists R1,750 after hours and R2,250 on public holidays, and a Johannesburg price guide adds about 50 percent for weekends and holidays. All are market figures, not our rates.
-
Why do the price guides disagree so much?
They measure different things: some give national ranges, some give city figures, and several are run by sites that pass leads to plumbers, so their numbers are a direction rather than a price list. A guide last updated in 2025 is also already a year behind.
-
Do plumbers mark up parts?
A part fitted by a plumber can cost more than the same part on a hardware shelf, and reviewers have reported markups of 200 percent and more on taps. Before you approve a quote, ask what each part is and look up its shelf price yourself.
-
What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?
An estimate is a best guess that can move once work starts. A quote is a price for a defined piece of work, and it should only change if you agree to a change in the work. Before you sign, ask what any line without a figure next to it will cost.
-
How do I pay, and why not in cash?
By card or EFT to the business. Cash handed over for parts appears on no invoice and cannot be matched to an insurance claim, so a request for cash before the work starts is a reason to stop and ask questions.
-
Will insurance pay the plumber, and what is the excess?
If the claim is accepted, the insurer pays its share and you pay the excess your policy sets. On a consumer forum, owners reported a R1,250 excess for a new geyser with one insurer and R500 for an element replacement with another, in 2022 and 2023. Ask for an invoice that splits the insurer’s part from yours.
