Blocked Drains Benoni

Blocked drains in Benoni are cleared from the yard gully or an inspection eye wherever possible, not forced through the toilet, and what comes out is shown to you. A drain that keeps blocking gets a CCTV drain inspection instead of a second round of the same.

Drain Unblocking Benoni Homes Need, Indoors and Out

Anything from one sluggish basin to the main line overflowing at the yard gully.

  • Kitchen sinks

Fat, food scraps and coffee grounds set in the trap or the branch line, cleared and flushed through.

  • Toilets

Pans that fill and drain slowly or not at all, cleared without lifting the pan wherever that can be avoided.

  • Showers, baths and basins

Hair and soap in wastes and traps, taken out rather than pushed further down the line.

  • Yard gullies

Overflowing gullies outside the kitchen or bathroom, emptied and cleared through to the next access point.

  • Main sewer lines

The line from the house to the municipal connection, rodded or jetted from an inspection eye.

  • High-pressure jetting

For fat, silt and sludge that a rod punches through but does not remove.

Benoni’s Sewer Depot Clears About 800 Blockages a Month

The City says most are caused by things that should never have gone down a drain, and every one of them passed through a house drain first.

Ekurhuleni’s Benoni depot, which also covers Daveyton and Etwatwa, responds to about 800 sewer blockages a month. The City gave that figure in October 2025, while clearing sewers in Chief Albert Luthuli, and said the blockages are caused mainly by foreign objects people have thrown away. Those are blockages in the municipal network, after the water has left the property.

The objects are no mystery. When a sewer overflowed at a Boksburg hospital in 2023, the clumps were mainly wet wipes, paper towels and soft plastic. In Daveyton in 2025 the metro listed stones, bricks, bottles, cans, rugs and even cow skins. The advice that came with the 2023 overflow was simple: only waste water, human waste and toilet paper belong in a toilet.

Inside your own property the same things do their damage sooner. A house drain is far narrower than a street sewer, with bends, joints and a gully trap along the way, and a wipe that catches on any of them becomes a net for the next one. Fat from the kitchen sets around the mat and every flush adds a layer, until water backs up at the lowest opening, usually the yard gully or a ground-floor shower.

That is why clearing the line is only half the job. A rod punches a hole through a mat of wipes and fat, the water drains away, and most of the blockage stays where it was, ready to close again. The useful question after any blockage is what came out: wipes and fat point to habits in the house, while roots or pieces of broken pipe mean the line itself needs looking at with a camera.

The cheapest prevention is dull, but it works. Keep a lidded bin beside every toilet, wipe greasy pans with paper before they are washed, and fit a strainer in the kitchen sink. Keep the grid over the yard gully clear of leaves and sand as well, because a gully that fills with garden rubbish blocks from the top down.

After any blockage, ask to see what came out of the drain. It tells you whether the fix is a habit in the house or a repair to the pipe.

A Clear Drain Is Not the End of the Job

Four rules aimed at the drain that blocks again a week later.

  • You see what came out

Wipes, fat, roots or rubble: the cause is shown to you before the job is closed, so you know what to change.

  • Rods before jets

Rodding is used where rodding will do. Jetting is recommended only with the reason written on the quote.

  • Paperwork for a sewage claim

If sewage has damaged floors or carpets, the cause goes in writing with photos, and the invoice is split between the insurer and you.

  • Each method on its own line

Clearing, jetting and any camera work are itemised separately, so you can see what each part cost.

Where the Water Stands Says Where the Blockage Is

Three patterns, and what each one usually needs.

  • One basin drains slowly and nothing else does

    What it usually means
Hair and soap caught in that basin’s trap or pop-up waste, before it joins any other pipe.
    What it needs
The trap taken off and cleaned. No rods, and nothing outside needs opening.
  • Every fitting in the house drains slowly at once

    What it usually means
The shared line out to the municipal connection is partly blocked, further down than where the branches meet.
    What it needs
Clearing from the inspection eye nearest the connection, then every fitting run together to prove the main line.
  • It blocks every few months in the same place

    What it usually means
Roots at a joint, a sagging section that holds solids, or a cracked pipe.
    What it needs
A camera down the line before it is cleared again, so the repair goes to the spot.

The Blockage Is Located Before Anything Is Pushed Through

Clearing from the wrong end can drive a blockage deeper, so the first job is working out where it is.

  1. 1

    Send the form

Say which fittings are affected and whether anything is overflowing outside.

  2. 2

    The call back

A few questions to place the blockage, then the call-out fee in rand, and a time.

  3. 3

    Clear from the right end

The line is opened at the gully or the inspection eye nearest the blockage and cleared, and what comes out is shown to you.

  4. 4

    Run every fitting

Each basin, shower and toilet on the line is run and flushed with you there, so you see it drain before anyone leaves.

What Benoni Homeowners Ask About Blocked Drains

The cost first, then what to try yourself and what to leave alone.

  • What will clearing a blocked drain in Benoni cost me?

Price guides from 2025 and 2026 put drain rodding at roughly R650 to R1,800 and high-pressure jetting at R1,200 to R3,500, depending on the guide. Those are market ranges, not our rates. The call-out fee is given in rand on the call back, before anyone drives.

  • Are flushable wipes safe to flush?

No. A wipe marked flushable leaves the toilet but holds together far longer than toilet paper, so it snags at joints and bends. Cotton buds, dental floss and sanitary products go in the bin too.

  • Should I try a chemical drain cleaner first?

Rarely. Chemical cleaners can soften hair and soap but do little to wipes, roots or fat further down. If you have used one, say so on the call back, as it changes how the line can be safely opened.

  • What is the difference between rodding and jetting?

Rodding pushes a flexible rod or spinning cable through the line to break up or pull out a blockage. Jetting sends high-pressure water through a nozzle that scours the pipe wall clean.

  • Can tree roots block a drain?

Yes. Roots enter at joints and cracks and form a mat that catches everything else. Cut back, they regrow through the same gap, and the CCTV drain inspection page explains how that gap is found.

  • Why does the kitchen sink keep blocking?

Usually fat. It runs down warm, then cools and sets on the pipe wall, catching food scraps, and hot water only moves it further along. A sink that blocks again soon after clearing usually needs its branch line jetted.

  • Why is the gully in my yard overflowing?

Usually the line beyond it is blocked and the water comes up at the lowest opening. A trap packed with sand or leaves blocks the gully itself. If the street manhole is overflowing too, the blockage is in the City’s sewer.

  • How do I clear a blocked toilet myself?

Use a flanged plunger that seals into the pan outlet, and push and pull firmly with water covering the cup. Do not flush until the level drops. If other fittings are backing up too, the blockage is further down, beyond a plunger’s reach.
