One Suburb, Two Water Systems
Which notice group your street falls in decides when your taps run dry, and where to look first when they do.
Ekurhuleni’s water notices do not treat Rynfield as one place. The town streets appear alongside Northmead and Farrarmere, while Rynfield Agricultural Holdings appears alongside Crystal Park, Daveyton and Mayfield. The 27-hour Rand Water shutdown of 24 June 2024 listed Rynfield, and the 14-hour and 77-hour shutdowns of 5 and 26 July 2024 listed Rynfield AH. The 2011 census counted the two separately as well, with 11,956 people in Rynfield and 3,178 in Rynfield AH.
The split runs through older records too. A City notice of September 2021 named Rynfield among the areas whose reservoirs draw on Rand Water’s Vlakfontein reservoir, and the same notice put parts of Rynfield on the list for the KNH pump station in Northmead, where both pumps were giving trouble. In September 2025 a pump stoppage at Rand Water’s Zwartkoppies station, which feeds the Benoni reservoir, dried taps in the areas supplied by the Northmead tower, Rynfield and Morehill among them. In September 2022 the City also listed Rynfield among the areas whose supply was interrupted by load-shedding, because water towers are filled by pumping from reservoirs using electricity.

For a household, that means two Rynfield neighbours can lose water on different days. Before you put a dry tap down to the City, find your exact area name on the notice. If your group is not listed, the cause may be on your own side of the meter, which makes it a plumbing job rather than a wait.
Rynfield has its own wastewater works as well. ERWAT’s Rynfield works was built in 1969 and extended in 1979, and it treats sewage from the Benoni, Cloverdene and Rynfield areas before the chlorinated effluent goes into a tributary of the Blesbokspruit. None of that reaches inside your boundary: the drains from the house to the municipal connection are yours to keep clear, whichever works treats what leaves them.
Living between two systems also changes the first phone call. On the call back after the form, the plumber asks which group your street is in and whether it was on a notice, because that one answer separates a City outage from a fault on your side. Settling it on the phone is how you avoid paying a call-out for a shutdown.
Learn whether your Rynfield street sits in the Rynfield or the Rynfield AH group, so a dry tap on a day your group is not listed sends you to your own stopcock and meter first.
Three Faults That Fit a Rynfield Property
Each follows from how Rynfield is laid out, with meters at the gate and, on the holdings, long supply runs to the house.
Dry taps on a day your group is not on the notice
- What it usually means
- A stopcock someone closed, an old gate valve whose gate has dropped off its spindle, a burst on the pipe between the meter and the house, or an unplanned fault in the street.
- What it needs
- The stopcock and the meter checked first. A dial that moves while the taps are dry means a burst on your side; a still dial and an open stopcock mean a call to the City on 0860 543 000, not a plumber.
A cottage or outbuilding dry while the house has water
- What it usually means
- A fault on the branch that feeds it: a closed or failed valve, a burst somewhere along the buried run, or air trapped at a high point after an outage.
- What it needs
- The branch checked from where it leaves the main line, any leak located before digging, and a valve fitted at the branch if there is none.
Water standing in the meter box
- What it usually means
- A weeping joint at the meter or at the stopcock beside it, often first noticed when the supply comes back at full pressure.
- What it needs
- The joint dried and watched to see which side it comes from. The meter and the street side are the City’s, so report those and leave the meter alone; the stopcock and everything after it are a plumbing repair.

Methods That Suit a Long Supply Pipe
On a holding the faulty pipe can run a long way under lawn, paving or a driveway. These four methods keep that from getting expensive.
The fee set for your address
The call-out is given in rand on the call back for where you are, so a long drive never turns into a surprise at the gate.
One opening, in the right place
On a long buried run the leak is pinned down before digging, and the opening and how it will be put back are written on the quote.
Watched under pressure before backfilling
The repaired section runs at full supply with you looking on, before any soil goes back over it.
What went into the ground, on record
Every part is named by brand and size on the invoice, so whoever digs next knows what is down there.
Rynfield Questions, From Holdings to Boat Lake
Cost comes first. The rest are particular to Rynfield’s streets, estates and holdings.
-
What does a plumber cost in Rynfield?
Price guides from 2025 and 2026 put a standard call-out at roughly R450 to R950, and one puts a call-out plus the first hour at R1,100 to R1,650 before materials. Those are market ranges, not our rates.
-
Do you go out as far as Rynpark and Petit?
Yes. Pretoria Road runs north-east for about 10 kilometres through Rynfield and Rynpark to Petit, and the whole stretch is covered. Put the suburb you are actually in on the form.
-
Do you cover Ebotse Golf and Country Estate?
Yes. Put the estate name and stand number in the form, and say how contractors are let in at the gate. In 2023 the estate manager said the Benoni 1 and 2 reservoirs in Northmead feed Ebotse’s water systems, so outages there reach the estate too.
-
Sewage is coming up near Boat Lake. Who do I call?
From a municipal manhole or the pump station, report it to the City on 0860 543 000. In August 2026 the City Manager said the pump station, once on dry land, is now fully submerged as the dam has risen, and raising the remaining manholes is planned for 2026/27. Sewage rising only through your own gully or toilet points to a blockage in your line.
-
Should a house far from its meter have its own stopcock?
It is worth having one. The main stopcock usually sits at the meter, a long run in a burst on a holding, and a second valve where the supply enters the house shuts off the house while the garden stays supplied. It is cheapest to fit while the line is open for another job.
-
Does a power cut in Rynfield affect the water too?
It can. In February 2025, cable theft outside the Rynfield substation tripped the Morehill substation, and power took 48 to 70 hours to restore. What a long power cut does to the water is explained on the page for a plumber in Northmead.
-
Is it worth replacing the whole pipe from the gate to the house?
Sometimes. One leak on a long buried line is a repair, but when leaks keep appearing at different points, or the pipe cracks wherever it is uncovered, a new line can cost less than chasing the next few.
-
How do I give directions to a property on Rynfield AH?
Give the holding or portion number, its road, the nearest cross street and anything that marks the gate, as street numbers can be hard to find on the holdings. On the call back, say which gate to use and whether there are dogs or a lock.
